ARROWS Drug/Pharmaceutical Litigation

“I think it is irresponsible to try and extend liability beyond those areas that are scientifically justifiable and defensible, and good lawyers will stay within those parameters.  In that fashion, you do your client a service, and you do the legal profession a service.”
Mike Gallagher

The scope of the firm’s fight for justice on behalf of its clients extends into all fields that produce products incorporating a greater risk of harm than necessary, and the Gallagher Law Firm was the only United States firm to get verdicts for both Phen-fen and Rezulin, two drugs that were permanently removed from the market by virtue of evidence produced during the trials.  The firm is currently representing multiple plaintiffs in cases pertaining to such drugs as Trasylol, Vioxx, Zyprexa and Seroquel and the firm also regularly monitors the pharmaceutical industry to identify unreasonably dangerous drugs that are removed, or have the potential to be removed, from the market.

Trasylol Information Update

Trasylol is a blood-clotting drug produced by Bayer AG that was used during heart surgery.  The drug was recalled in November, 2007 because patients who received Trasylol were more likely to die than patients who received competing, less expensive blood clotting drugs that were available on the market.

Yaz®/Yasmin® Linked to Blood Clots, Pulmonary Embolism, Stroke, Heart Attack, and Organ Injury

Yaz and Yasmin are now involved in multiple federal lawsuits.
In October of 2008, a warning letter was sent by the Food and Drug Administration to Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc., the manufacturer of Yaz and Yasmin, very popular and heavily promoted birth control pills.  The warning letter reprimanded the drug company for the marketing specifically the misleading television advertisements that overstate Yaz’s efficacy, broaden Yaz’s indications and minimize the serious risks associated with this oral contraceptive.  The FDA asked Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. to immediately stop those advertisements.

About Yaz and Yasmin

Yaz and Yasmin (drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol) are 4th generation oral contraceptive medications, containing a combination of the hormones estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and progestin (drospirenone). The only difference between these two drugs is the amount of estrogen that they contain (Yasmin, 30 mcg; Yaz, 20 mcg). The drugs prevent ovulation and also cause changes in the lining of the uterus making it difficult for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for an egg that is fertilized to attach to the wall of uterus, thus preventing pregnancy.
Yaz and Yasmin have three FDA-approved uses: Pregnancy prevention, alleviation of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and treatment of moderate acne in women who would want to use an oral contraceptive for birth control. Yasmin and Yaz dominate the contraceptive market in the US, with an estimated 25% market share.
Yaz alone is the top-selling birth control pill in the United States (2008 figures).

Yaz and Yasmin Side-Effects

The commonly reported side-effects to Yaz and Yasmin are relatively mild, such as decrease in sex drive, weight gain, nausea and vomiting, headaches, susceptibility to yeast infections, vaginal discharge, and breakthrough bleeding or spotting.

Serious and Debilitating Injuries Related to Yaz and Yasmin

The following are the serious and debilitating injuries reported from the drospirenone a component of both Yaz and Yasmin:

  1. Blood clots
  2. Pulmonary embolism
  3. Heart attack
  4. Stroke
  5. Deep vein thrombosis
  6. Gall blader disease or gallstones
  7. Liver, kidney, or other organ failure
  8. Pancreatitis
  9. Elevated potassium levels

Each tablet of Yaz/Yasmine contains 3 mg drospirenone, a progestin hormone. According to the FDA, drospirenone can lead to hyperkalemia, a condition caused by excessive amounts of potassium in the blood of high risk patients, resulting in potentially serious heart and health problems.

If you or a loved one have been prescribed Yaz or Yasmin and have experienced any of these symptoms, please contact us immediately for a free consultation. Consult with your physician before you stop taking any medications, including Yaz and Yasmin.
